Controversy surrounds the retirement of Mobile's top federal agent. Debra Mack, the Special Agent in charge of the local FBI office, is calling it quits at the end of August.
Sources close to this story say the special agent was at the center of an internal investigation involving a high ranking local politician. The investigation was some two years in the making and Mack was reportedly given two choices by the bureau.
Our source says she was offered a demotion as a field agent in Birmingham or to retire. Mack made the retirement announcement to her staff on Tuesday.
A spokesperson at the Mobile office tells us that Mack plans to stay in the Port City.
The News 5 Investigative Team tried to catch up with Mack to ask her questions about the investigation. She was quickly whisked back to Washington D.C. on Wednesday afternoon so we haven't had a chance... yet.
We first introduced you to Special Agent Mack in 2005 when she was chosen for the job in Mobile. At the time, Mack was one of only two African-American women to ever head an FBI field office in the entire country!
