The Baldwin County School Board met Thursday night in Bay Minette to talk about proposed cuts that could help offset a $47 Million budget shortfall.
Board members approved job cuts affecting 192 teachers and 129 support staff. School Superintendent Dr. Faron Hollinger says some of the employees may get rehired once the federal stimulus money is handed out. He says he will use every penny he can to give back jobs.
Board members also voted Thursday night to close Vaughn Elementary School in Bay Minette. Parents and children held up signs before the meeting to try to sway board members. Once the closing was approved, all of the Vaughn supporters got up and left the meeting.
Another change coming to Baldwin County Public Schools this fall.
School board members approved a lunch price increase. The increase is 25 cents a meal. High school and middle school students will now pay $2.00 and Elementary students will pay $1.75 a meal.
Students on the federally mandated reduced lunch plan will not see an increase.
