LAKELAND, Fla. (CBS) ― Two pilots got the scare of their lives April 19 when the home-built plane they were flying suddenly stopped functioning. The amazing incident was caught on tape.
Kyle Davis, who was flying the plane, and passenger Joe Surowiec have plenty of piloting experience, but weren't prepared for what happened on their way to a Florida air show.
The engine suddenly conked out over Winter Haven and the two men were forced to make an emergency landing on a busy roadway. Davis landed the plane safely on the road and then pulled up to a store front, according to CBS affiliate WTSP-TV in Tampa.
The entire incident was caught on tape.
The pilots spoke with CBS Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith about the harrowing experience Thursday. Davis and Surowiec told Smith they have hundreds of hours of piloting experience but mostly chalked their survival up to luck.
