JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A federal lawsuit alleges squalid
conditions and physical and emotional abuse at a south Mississippi
juvenile detention center.
The lawsuit was filed Monday against Harrison County over a
juvenile detention center run by a private company. The suit says
the county pays the company $1.6 million a year.
A call Monday to Harrison County's administrator was not
immediately returned.
The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Gulfport by a
youth advocacy group on behalf of a 17-year-old boy referred to
only by the initials "D.W."
The lawsuit alleges juveniles at the facility have been
subjected to assaults by staff, 23-hour a day lock-down and
"unsanitary conditions resulting in widespread contraction of
scabies and staph infections."
