NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - NATO forces have chased down Somali
pirates who attacked a tanker off the Horn of Africa today.
The Marshalls Island vessel came under rocket and small-arms
attack. An official says the ship managed to escape using "speed
and maneuvers."
Dutch forces under NATO trailed the pirates and were able to
free 20 captured fishermen seized in a hijacking a week ago. They
briefly detained seven pirates, but the official says they had to
be released because NATO doesn't have a "detainment policy."
Today's other attack targeted a Belgian ship and 10 crew
members. The ship has not been heard from since sending two alerts
about a pirate attack.
Somali pirates have attacked more than 80 boats this year, and
taken more the 290 crew members hostage.
