MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama House has passed a bill that
would require restaurants to disclose the country of origin for
seafood items on their menus.
The bill by Republican Rep. Spencer Collier of Irvington would
require the disclosure either on the menu or on a placard displayed
inside the establishment.
Collier's south Alabama district includes the fishing port of
Bayou La Batre. He said he believes it's important for people who
order seafood to know if it was harvested in the United States or
in another country.
Collier has introduced the bill for seven years and this is the
first time it has passed the House. The measure now goes to the
Senate for debate.
