A sluggish economy has created a demand in several sectors including security. The Mobile Police Department is still accepting applications.
Next week, the department will add 31 recruits from its Police academy.

Recruits are required to complete a 14 week rigorous regimen--ranging from physical agility to a background check.
This morning the class conducted one of its last practice drills at Mobile Bay Port.

Chief Phillip Garrett says with the economy in a downturn more professionals are seeking jobs in law enforcement.
H says it's a win-win situation for both professionals and the Police Department.
"They've either retired from one position or maybe been laid off from a position. And then they're in that 30 to 40 year old range which is good for us because it gives us a person that's got a little seasoning and the maturity,"Said Garrett.

The Mobile City Council applied for a $2.5 Million dollar Federal grant. If the funds are granted it would allow the city to hire 20 additional officers.
