A robbery suspect is in the hospital tonight following a holdup and chase that ended in gunfire. Authorities say the suspect was armed with a gun when he held up the Dollar General store on Moffett Road around 2:45 Saturday afternoon.
A sheriff's deputy spotted the getaway vehicle and tried to get him to pull over. Investigators say the man wrecked the truck during the chase and tried to run, then went back to the truck. That's when, authorities say, the suspect refused to obey the deputy and was shot several times.
Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson, Jr. says that right now it looks like the shooting was justified. "The preliminary indications are clear that the officer was acting properly in the line and scope of his authority. As you know, the driver of the pickup truck has been hit several times with fire from the officer," Tyson says.
The suspect's name has not been released. He was taken to USA Medical Center for treatment. The sheriff's deputy was not hurt.
