Tear Down Alabama Statehouse?

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The leaders of a committee looking at
building a new meeting place for the Alabama Legislature are
proposing adding a wing to the back of the Capitol.
The chairman of the Legislative Building Authority, Rep. Richard
Laird, and the vice chairman, Sen. Roger Bedford, have introduced
bills in the Legislature that would allow the panel to use land and
arrange financing to build a legislative wing at the rear of the
Capitol.
The Legislature currently meets across the street from the
Capitol in the Statehouse. The Statehouse was built in 1963 and now
has problems with leaks and mold.
House Minority Leader Mike Hubbard, who serves on the
Legislative Building Authority, says the Statehouse has outlived
its usefulness and needs to be razed.
