JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Gov. Haley Barbour has signed a bill that
would give back-to-school shoppers a tax break.
Clothing and shoes that cost less than $100 would be exempt from
the 7 percent sales tax during the last weekend in July. Similar
proposals have failed in Mississippi in recent years, but several
other states allow the so-called sales tax holidays.
The tax break would begin this summer.
Cities worried about losing revenue could opt out of the
tax-free weekend.
----
The bill is House Bill 348.
