Seven Days In The Dark

Seven Days In The Dark

More than a hundred homes on Dauphin Island's West End are still in the dark.

Hurricane Ike knocked out electricty on Dauphin Island's West End as it swept across the Gulf on its way to Texas, but it's what the storm left behind that is making it diffcult to turn the lights back on.

Ike dumped six feet of sand on Bienville Boulevard, the main road to the West End. Construction crews are using bulldozers to push the sand off the street, clearing the way for power crews to get to the problems.

"It's just part of life on Dauphin Island and we understand that," says Mayor Jeff Collier. "We just wished it wouldn't happen as often as it's been happening."

Mayor Collier hopes the road will be cleared by the end of this week, which is good news for residents who have been without electricty since early Thursday morning.
