LOS ANGELES (AP) - Could a series of text messages have had
something to do with the fiery commuter train wreck that killed 25
people in Southern California this past Friday? Authorities are at
least looking into the possibility. Federal investigators say they
will seek the cell phone records of two teenagers and a train
engineer as they consider whether text messages may have factored
into the accident. Kitty Higgins, a board member for the National
Transportation Safety Board, says her agency is talking with the
two teens and their families. The teens told KCBS-TV in Los Angeles
they had received a text message from the engineer at 4:22 p.m.
Friday -- just moments before the deadly crash. Higgins says the
engineer's cell phone wasn't recovered at the crash site as of
yesterday. No immediate word on what the teens and their families
have told investigators so far. The engineer was one of the 25 who
died in the wreck.
