Gulf Shores Feels Ike

Baldwin County beach communities dealing with rough surf, rip currents and possible coastal flooding thanks to Hurricane Ike

Hurricane Ike is already causing problems along Alabama's beaches. In Gulf Shores, dangerous rip currents and five foot seas forced lifeguards to close the Gulf of Mexico to swimmers. Double-red flags were posted along public beaches Wednesday morning. A double red flag means the water is closed to swimmers. Even local surfers, who enjoy the big waves, called it quits when the surf overpowered them.

"It's hard to handle and dangerous," says surfer Vitor Seibor. "The rip currents were pulling us 100 yards down the beach."

"We had to call it a day," says surfer Leland Hodges. "It just wasn't fun anymore and it was becoming dangerous."

Ike could also cause problems west of Gulf Shores. Coastal flooding could be an issue Thursday as well as possible beach erosion along Fort Morgan Road.
West Beach could also flood as Ike moves west towards Texas.
