They are calling it a hate crime. David Couling of Mobile was almost beaten to death last weekend and now police say they know who did it and why.
.At the end of the beach road in Pensacola Beach, a remote area where Escambia County Lt. Gary Montee says a horrific crime took place. "We found a man covered in blood. We found a cell phone by the van in the parking lot and we had blood on the van large crime scene area on the beach lot of blood."
It happened early Saturday morning near Park East. But Couling wasn't discovered until later in the day beaten, bloody and unconscious.
Investigators say they believe Robert Andrew Logan of Gulf Breeze is responsible. "It wasn't a robbery," says Montee, "his wallet was found in the vehicle. There was no motive to it other than a possible hate crime."
For folks who like to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main beach, Park East is perfect. "We've never seen anything out of the ordinary," says Wesley Rogers as he relaxes on the sand. News of the assault is surprising. "It's scary really, you don't think something like that would happen here. There are a bunch of families out here, kids everywhere."
The search is on for Logan. Once arrested he will be charged with aggravated battery and a hate crime.
