Disability Home Hurting For Donations

Disability Home Hurting For Donations

The Mulherin Home in Mobile says it needs the community's support more than ever.

The Mulherin Home has been caring for people with developmental disabilities for over half a century. The home says thanks in part to community donations, it has survived as a non-profit.
But Melody Lazauskas, the home's Assistant Director says donations have been down and they're struggling with day to day operations.
While the home is in the process of expanding its facility, she says they only receive grants for construction. So the home is planning to charge their residents more to offset costs like employee pay. But the Mulherin Home worries that some families may not be able to afford it.
"We've tried not to do an increase, tried to find funding from grants, tried to go out into the community and get support. And the community has been great I mean they support us whole heartedly you know and we appreciate that, but it just hasn't been enough. And so that's the only way to off set the cost is you know to pass it on to the families,"Said Lazauskas. If you would like to help out, you can call the Mulherin Home at 251-471-1998.
