Just after two o'clock in the afternoon a single engine Cessna went down at the Foley Municipal Airport and almost immediately burst into flames.
It was the smoke that caught Richard Mugan's attention. "I was just driving around and thought a house was on fire." He could have never imagined what really burning. "I was hoping he was still alive, you never know with a crash like that."
The pilot was pulled from the wreckage by the owner of the plane reportedly suffering severe burns. He was flown to USA Medical Center. There is no word on his condition and his name has not been released by authorities.
David spivey is the commander of the Baldwin County Civil Air Patrol squadron and says the pilot apparently had trouble on the take-off. "The gentleman that pulled him out of the airplane said he porpoised a few times, went up and down trying to keep air speed. He'd stall go down, pull up and eventually came off the runway."
It will be up to the National Transportation Safety Board to determine the official cause of the crash, but Mugan believes the pilot is very lucky. "I think it turned out great because the person is still alive. By the looks of that airplane it doesn't look like anybody could be alive. That's pretty bad."
The airport remains closed to all traffic, except helicopters, until further notice.
