HOUSTON (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry has ordered a lockdown and search
of Texas prisons after death row inmates made thousands of calls on
a smuggled cell phone.
Perry's office blamed an unidentified corrections officer for
taking a bribe to get the phone to inmate Richard Tabler.
Authorities say Tabler shared the phone with others and he
called a key state senator, telling him he knew his address and his
daughters' names.
Tabler's mother was arrested at Austin's airport Monday. She was
charged with buying minutes for the cell phone in her son's
possession.
Officials say more arrests are expected.
The governor says the security breach was being taken seriously
and violators would be prosecuted for any contraband found during
the lockdown.
