CHICAGO (AP) - Food banks and shelters across the country are
reporting a spike in demand as the tough economic times push more
people to charities.
The executive director of a shelter in Chicago says among those
in line for Thanksgiving dinners were people who helped provide
those meals last year. Mary Shaver of the Chicago Christian
Industrial League says these were the people who were donating
money -- "and now they're asking for help."
A spokesman for Feed America, which coordinates corporate
donations to more than 200 food banks, says he's hearing from them
that it's the worst it's ever been.
Charities are being squeezed from both ends. The Salvation Army
in the Washington, D.C., area says requests for help are up 30
percent while donations have dropped 20 percent.
