Former Mobile Mayor Dies

Lambert Mims served as City Commissioner, Public Works Commissioner and Mayor.

Former Mobile Mayor Lambert Mims died Monday. He was 78 years old.

Mims was born in Uriah. He was the rotating mayor of Mobile from 1965-1985 when city government was headed by a three member City Commission. Mims also served as the city's Public Works Commissioner.

In 1990, Mims was found guilty in federal court on corruption charges stemming from a U.S. Attorney investigation. Mims served 3 1/2 years in federal prison. Mims said he was innocent of those charges. He wrote two books; one of which focused on his political achievements as well as his prison term.

"Lambert Mims was a Christian man who set his priorities on the effective delivery of public services to the citizens of Mobile," said Mayor Sam Jones. "He'll be sadly missed by all of us."

Mims was the past president of the Alabama Baptist State Convention, Mobile Baptist Association and the Alabama League of Municipalities. He was also active in numerous civic organizations. In 1985, Mims was appointed the Alabama Waterways Ambassador by then Governor George Wallace.

Mimms leaves his wife, Reecie P. Mims, two sons, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.
