Blue Light Stalker?

Investigators are looking for a man they say used a blue light on an unmarked car to stop a woman along the Eastern Shore. The woman told police she was driving on Highway 31 in Spanish Fort around 6pm last night. The woman says a Dodge Charger, possibly white in color, with a blue light on the dash pulled her over. A man who didn't identify himself asked the woman for her driver license and proof of insurance. The woman told police because the man was not wearing a uniform, and didn't have a badge or gun, she drove off and called police.

Baldwin County Sheriff's Department spokesman Major Anthony Lowery says people should be alert Revolving blue lights on a dashboard are obsolete and no longer used by law enforcement.

"The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible police impersonation incident that took place on HWY 31 near Stagecoach Rd. in the early evening hours last night, November 18, 2008.

A female was stopped by what she believes to be a light colored, sports car or possibly a Dodge Charger displaying a revolving blue light on the dashboard. A clean cut white male approached the victim’s car and asked her to exit the vehicle. The victim was uncomfortable with the situation because the man had no badge or id.

The Victim asked the man to follow her to a safe location. She pulled off and he followed a short time but left. The Sheriff’s Office has no reason to believe the man was a law enforcement officer on duty or that the victim was stopped by an emergency vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating this case. The Sheriff’s Office would ask anyone who is stopped by an unmarked vehicle to use caution and ask for identification from the officer.

If you are involved in a traffic stop and become suspicious of the vehicle pulling you over, any true law enforcement officer will understand if you turn on your caution lights and drive to a safe, well-lit location.

Drivers can call 911 and ask to be connected to a dispatcher to verify whether the person making the traffic stop is a real officer.

Drivers should be suspicious of any officer who does not identify himself and show a badge during a traffic stop.

Law Enforcement officers no longer use single, revolving, dashboard lights. Instead, a true police officer will have strobe or LED lights.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office has 5 Dodge Chargers in its fleet. Four of the vehicles are marked, and the fifth vehicle, which is driven by an investigator with the Criminal Investigations Division, is unmarked but not white.
