LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The legislative bidding over what age limit
should be added to Nebraska's safe-haven law will start at 30 days.
A committee of state lawmakers advanced a bill Monday that calls
for a 30-day age limit after child welfare experts and others told
them 3 days was not old enough.
Gov. Dave Heineman, in a bill introduced on his behalf, called
for the 3-day limit. But he said Monday he's flexible on changing
that.
The Legislature will begin debating the bill on Tuesday.
Nebraska is the only state with a safe haven law that doesn't
set an age limit.
Since September, 34 children have been dropped off at hospitals
in the state. Some were teenagers.
