People we spoke with, including Mobile's first Black Mayor say Obama's victory is a symbol of hope for what's to come.
Mayor Sam Jones says Obama's victory came as no surprise. He says the country's first Black President shows great leadership. Jones also believes Obama had the most effective campaign organization in the history of the country. And when it comes to race, Jones says Obama's win is proof that society is showing progress.
"It shows a real shift in the character of the country and how the country looks at people as a whole. I think if we're dealing with new generations now. We're dealing with people who have different thoughts different mind sets and also people who look for a lot more out of elected officials,"Said Mayor Sam Jones.
Matthew Abdullah says Obama's win is a sign that times are changing. "To see this culmination of what's happening with Barack Obama to me, it is a completion of the Civil Rights struggle,"Said Abdullah.
