MIAMI (AP) - Barack Obama has won the battleground state of
Florida, a crippling blow for John McCain from the largest
presidential swing state and a sweet victory for Democrats still
bitter about the disputed 2000 race.
Florida gave him 27 of the 270 electoral votes he needed to get
to the White House and become the nation's first black president.
With 91 percent of the expected vote counted, Obama had 51 percent,
while his Republican opponent had 49 percent.
Obama was the first Democratic presidential candidate to win the
Sunshine State since Bill Clinton in 1996, and only the second
since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
Florida decided the 2000 race in a recount that gave the
election to President Bush, but there was no such drama this time.
Some voters were still waiting to cast ballots when Obama was
projected by The Associated Press as the winner in Florida at 10:57
p.m. EST.
