The Mobile County Health Department is offering $8 flu shots at two voting precincts.

Mobile Public Library (Toulminville Branch)
601 Stanton Rd.
7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Mount Vernon Community Center
19180 Shepard Lake Rd.
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

"If there are long lines you can get your flu shot beforehand," said Dr. Bernard Eichold, health officer for the local agency. "It's just something to try to make our community healthier and hopefully we'll prevent the flu."

More than 36,000 Americans die every year from the flu, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Outbreaks of the flu generally happen between November and March, Eichold said.

The CDC urges people at high risk for serious flu complications to get a vaccine. Those at high risk include young children, pregnant women, those with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart or lung disease, and people 65 and older.

Health officials say those who live with or care for those at high risk should also get a flu vaccine to keep from spreading the virus.
