OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Two more children have been abandoned at
Nebraska hospitals under the state's safe-haven law.
Both teens were left at hospitals over the weekend.
A police official says a 16-year-old girl was brought to
Nebraska from Arizona. They say the teen's mother spoke with
hospital staff, but did not give a reason for abandoning her
daughter. He said the teen was "unaware she was being dropped
off."
Another child was dropped off last night at a hospital in Omaha.
If the state confirms the cases, these would be the 25th and
26th children left under the safe-haven law that went into effect
this summer.
The law was intended to protect unwanted newborns, but doesn't
set an age limit. Nebraska's governor has called a special
legislative session to change the law.
