ATLANTA (AP) - Former President Carter says he and his wife are
"deeply saddened" by the news that Hamilton Jordan (JUR'-duhn)
has died.
Jordan was the political strategist who helped propel Carter to
the White House and then served as his chief of staff. He died at
his Atlanta home Tuesday night after battling various forms of
cancer for more than 20 years. He was 63.
Carter says Jordan's "judgment, insight and wisdom were
excelled only by his compassion and love of our country."
After his White House days, Jordan sought office himself, losing
a Democratic primary for a U.S. Senate seat in 1986.
A memorial service will be Friday at the Carter Center in
Atlanta.
