Navy's Future In Fairhope

A Fairhope company is building a scale model of the navy’s newest aircraft carrier. Workers at Scale Reproductions say there’s a lot of detail in this ship.

This vessel is built to one-144th actual size by guys devoted to detail.

“It's my passion so how many jobs can people get to where they get to say I get to work in the thing I'm passionate about,” says Team Supervisor Mike Celeskey.

He says he’s been crazy about models since he was nine years old. Celeskey says his favorite part is painting because that means the job's almost done. We agreed not to divulge the name of this yet-to-be launched carrier. Unlike the model kits mike tackled as a kid, each piece at Scale Reproductions is made from scratch.

“We flushed out the entire large structure first and then add on to it from there,” says Celeskey.

The ship's not quite ready. They're only about 80 percent done and they have to roll with the punches.

“So as we're building this carrier the contractor is also building its carrier and it's floating in the water, but they continue to change it, so when they change we have to change it as well,” says Celeskey.

This model took more than four months to build. The tiny ship will be part of a naval presentation once its real world counter-part is ready to go.
