Couples could tie the knot in as little as a month after California's top court legalizes gay marriage.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Same-sex couples could tie the knot in as
little as a month after a California Supreme Court ruling allowing
gay marriage in the state.
The decision was greeted with tears, hugs and kisses by
supporters and outrage by opponents who hope voters in November
will approve a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says he respects the
Court's decision and will not support an amendment.
The conservative Alliance Defense Fund says it will ask the
justices for a stay of the decision until after the election. They
hope California will be added to the list of 26 states that have
approved constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage.
In 2004, Massachusetts became the first, and so far only, state
to legalize gay marriage.
