JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A 28-year-old contract worker from Bolton
is dead from an explosion at the International Paper mill in
Redwood.
Warren County coroner Doug Huskey told The Associated Press late
tonight (Saturday) that Marcus Christopher Broome had died of
trauma to the chest and that an autopsy will be performed tomorrow
(Sunday) at the state crime lab in Jackson.
A statement from International Paper says this afternoon's
(Saturday) explosion sent 17 other contractors to a hospital.
A nurse supervisor at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg,
Hazel Hill, says five of the injured are being transferred tonight
to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta.
When asked by The Associated Press why they were being
transferred, she said --quote-- we are not a burn center.
Hill says the others were treated and that "no patients had
been admitted."
IP spokeswoman Amy Sawyer's statement says the explosion
occurred as the mill's recovery boiler was being started after the
annual maintenance shutdown for the mill in Redwood, about 32 miles
from Jackson.
Warren County deputy coroner Kelda Bailess told the Associated
Press no details were available about the contractor who was
killed. Officials were notifying the victim's family.
The manager of environment, health and safety at the Redwood
mill, John Adams, said at least 400 employees including contractors
were on site when the explosion happened. He said officials with
the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration had
arrived to investigate.
Adams said officials planned to secure the boiler before
proceeding.
