USA Employee Resigns Over Money Discrepancies

Controversy surrounds a University of South Alabama employee who reportedly received funds improperly.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A report from the Alabama Department of
Examiners of Public Accounts maintains that a University of South
Alabama administrator improperly received funds from the school and
a federal program.
The report released Friday says Mary Bernita Pulmas got about
$61,000 from the federal Upward Bound program and charged the
university for nearly $8,000 in car rental fees for which there was
no business purpose.
Report says Pulmas has not repaid the expenses, plus another
$1,300 in improper car rentals she allowed her secretary to charge.
Pulmas was director of student services at the west Mobile
school from 2000 to 2004.
According to the report, she received several thousand dollars a
year in cash advances from the federal program for students who
were not enrolled.
A school spokesman said they discovered financial discrepancies
in 2004 and asked Pulmas to resign that year.
