Creola Police and the Mobile County Sheriff's office swat team spent most of their early morning here along Hall Branch Road. Police say a man in the home had a gun and was threatening to kill his family inside. The suspect allegedly shot his nephew. The victim was taken to USA Medical Center. After the shooting, police learned the gunman was alone inside. That's when the armed stand-off began. Lawmen say precautions were taken because of the circumstances surrounding the case.
“Because he was suspected of being a mental patient based on the information obtained from the niece,” says Creola Police Officer Jason Shaw. When the Mobile County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team arrived they tried to coax the suspect out.
“Our negotiators attempted to talk to the person for several hours,” says Sergeant Jerry Taylor. “They did engage him in conversation but they weren't able to get him to go outside the residence.” After negotiators failed to talk the suspect out that's when the swat team had to break down the front door and get him.
“Being that it was a two story residence,” says Taylor. “We had two five person teams make simultaneous entry one upstairs and one downstairs.” Taylor says the suspect surrendered without incident.
