NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Flamboyant restaurant millionaire Al Copeland
has died after a fight with cancer.
Copeland's spokeswoman, Kit Wohl, says Copeland died Sunday at a
clinic near Munich, Germany. His family said earlier that Copeland
had been diagnosed with a malignant salivary gland tumor.
He was 64.
Copeland was best known for the Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken,
but founded and ran other restaurants.
The Popeyes chain grew to more than 800 stores in the United
States and several foreign countries by 1989. Copeland lost control
of Popeyes after a debt-ridden buyout of rival Church's backfired.
