While most farmers are just beginning to get their fields ready for the growing season, some narcotics officers in Santa Rosa County are bringing in their first crop of the year.
It may be hard to believe, but five thousand marijuana plants can fit in a grocery bag, when they are only two inches high. "Each one of these plants capable of producing a thousand dollars," according to Sgt. Scott Haines with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office.
Acting on a tip, narcotics officers found the five thousand plants in a wooded area near Juniper Creek Road and Country Mill Road in Jay. "It's very prevalent for drugs. Methamphetamine is also a huge problem due to rural area people are able to do it in places we would never suspect," says Haines.
Last year, Santa Rosa County was second in the state of Florida, in the number of marijuana plants seized with two thousand 600. This seizure almost doubles that and the season has just begun.
Five thousand mature plants would have a street value of five million dollars according to Haines. An investigation into whose pot the deputies bagged, is underway.
