SUPREME COURT (AP) - The Supreme Court will have the chance to
define the meaning of the Second Amendment "right to keep and bear
arms" by hearing arguments on the matter today.
The court is taking up a dispute over Washington, D.C.'s handgun
ban.
At issue is whether the Constitution protects an individual's
right to own guns or if that right is tied to service in a state
militia.
Even if the high court determines individuals have the right to
own guns, the justices will still have to decide whether the
32-year handgun ban in the District can stand.
The case is among the most closely watched of the term because
the current nine justices and their predecessors have given no
definitive answer on gun rights.
