Not everyone happy about new road project eliminating the center turn lane on Fairhope's busiest road

Fairhope's busiest road is getting a facelift. Work crews are ripping up the center turn lane on Greeno Road, replacing miles of concrete and asphalt with grass. City leaders say the tree-lined median will add more charm and character to this popular, Eastern Shore community. But not everyone is happy about the road project. Business owner Debra Green says eliminating the middle turn lane will hurt her nursery.

"They've taken our access away without our knowledge and without our permission," says Green. "We weren't even given a chance to oppose this. We've heard there were public meetings held but we have no clue when they were held. We would have been there."

Fairhope City Council president Bob Gentle says Green was given plenty of opportunity to voice her concerns about the road project.

"She's actually been before us," says Gentle. "In fact, she's been before the traffic committee which I'm on and we put her on the agenda last meeting to hear her. We're certainly not trying to run away from her, we're not trying to stonewall."

Gentle says the decision to remove the center turn lane isn't politically motivated but rather an engineering requirement.
