The Big Brothers Big Sisters organization of South Alabama is celebrating a big boost in their mentorship program.
A spokesman for the local chapter says the organization just partnered up with two fraternities in the area.
Members from Alpha Phi Alpha and Omega Psi Phi will serve as mentors as part of a new program.
"What better way then to have some men that stand together all the time to be mentors for these young people..particularly the young African American boys that we have,"Said Charles Mullins, a spokesman for the local chapter. Mullins says the program has been trying to recruit African American mentors to help out with life skills training and one-on-one mentoring.
"I do understand the plight of young African American males, especially foster children. So I really just want to be an example to them and just show them that they can do great things in the community and in the world and beyond,"Said Terrence Platt, a mentor.
The organization was able to develop the mentorship program thanks to a grant they just received.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Alabama says there are still 40 children on their waiting list who need mentors, in the Mobile and Baldwin County area.
