TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Gov. Charlie Crist plans to veto a bill
that would have allowed developers to destroy seagrass beds if they
agreed to restore it in other areas.
Crist said Tuesday he wanted "to save the seagrass, of
course."
A part of the bill (HB 7059) would have allowed marine
development that endangered seagrasses if the developers agreed to
replant new seagrass beds elsewhere. But environmentalists opposed
that. They say it would have threatened acres of underwater marine
nursery grounds with no guarantee that new beds would flourish.
