BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A federal judge has ordered fired
HealthSouth chief Richard Scrushy returned to Alabama from prison
to testify in civil lawsuits over the huge fraud at the
rehabilitation chain.
A judge told federal authorities to have Scrushy in Birmingham
for sworn testimony about HealthSouth. Those sessions are supposed
to start June 16.
But a lawyer for Scrushy says the one-time executive will fight
the order. Attorney Martin Adams says Scrushy wants to remain in a
fenceless federal prison in Texas rather than spending time in a
jail in suburban Birmingham.
Scrushy was acquitted in the HealthSouth fraud, but he is
serving a nearly seven-year term for his role in a state bribery
scheme. Former Gov. Don Siegelman also was convicted.
