FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) - Mary Nell Rollings (on the right in photo), Alabama's first female
police officer known for patrolling Florence's streets on a Harley in the early 1950s, died Monday.
She was 81.
Rollings was born May 31, 1927 on a small cotton farm near
Albertville.
According to her son, her passion for law enforcement led her to
join the police department around 1953. During her 11 years at the
department, Rollings helped raid bootleggers back when the city was
dry, conducted middle-of-the-night searches and even wrote the
police chief a ticket.
Her husband died in 1964 and with a young family of four
children to raise alone, Rollings left the department.
One of her last requests was for a police service for her
funeral. Services will take place at 3 p.m. Thursday at Greenview
Funeral Home.
