Budget Woes Threaten Mobile EMS

Mobile County's Emergency Medical Services Rescue Squad could shut down.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Budget woes threaten to shut down Mobile
County's Emergency Medical Services Rescue Squad.
County Commission President Stephen Nodine says the county's
1-cent sales tax is not enough to fully cover funds for services
like EMS. He said the Alabama Legislature is responsible for
locating a funding source.
The County Commission approved a $500,000 budget amendment for
EMS operating expenses last week.
EMS board chairman Dr. Steve Bowden says he doesn't know the
solution to the agency's financial woes, but says a system similar
to the county's E-911 operation could work. He said money
appropriated to E-911 is earmarked for that purpose only.
