The family of a man involved in a high speed chase says he died after being struck by a police officer's cruiser.
A nursing supervisor at USA Medical Center confirmed that Jermain Rogers Gilliard died Tuesday night.
According to Mobile County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Kate Johnson, 34 year-old Jermaine Rogers was the passenger in a chase down I-65 from Bay Minettte that concluded in the City of Mobile. Hillary Bernard Baldwin, 38, was driving the vehicle and lost control after authorities used spike strips across Interstate-65 to disable his vehicle. After riding on the vehicles rims down Interstate-165, the two men ran out of the car at Telegraph and Bay Bridge roads when Baldwin lost control of the vehicle. According to Johnson, Baldwin was quickly apprehended and Jermaine Rogers was accidentally struck by a Satsuma Police Officer's vehicle while running from the scene. Jermaine Rogers was taken to USA Medical Center, where a nursing supervisor at the hospital tells News 5 he is deceased.
Johnson, says these two men were under surveillance by Mobile County Sheriff's deputies for several weeks as part of an ongoing investigation.
Baldwin will be charged by the sheriff's office with trafficking cocaine.
