BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A lawyer for Don Siegelman wants a
Justice Department review into the prosecution of the former
governor to focus partly on the reasons a federal prosecutor in
Montgomery stepped aside from the case.
Vince Kilborn said Tuesday he would make the suggestion in
response to a letter from the department's Office of Professional
Responsibility. The letter confirmed that the office was probing
allegations that the case against Siegelman was politically
motivated.
Kilborn said the office should seek documents regarding a
decision by U.S. Attorney Leura Canary to recuse herself from the
prosecution of Siegelman.
Canary stepped aside from investigations into Siegelman six
years ago. She denied any conflict of interest and said she was
acting "out of an abundance of caution."
