Villian Of the Year

The nominees for this year's NME Awards have been announced today (29 January 2007) with Arctic Monkeys leading the way with seven nominations.

NME Editor Conor McNicholas feels the band highly deserved to dominate the nominations.

"It's a measure of just what a special band the Arctic Monkeys are that they have been able to come back and make such an impact album two and you've got to feel the way things are going that we might very well see the same thing happen on album three," he said.

Troubled singer Amy Winehouse didn't fare as well however after being nominated for Villain of the Year alongside Prime Minister Gordon Brown, US President George W. Bush and Tony Blair.

Winehouse, who is currently in rehab after a video was leaked to the press last week allegedly showing her smoking crack, will also battle Pete Doherty for the Worst Dressed title - she received no nominations for her music or live performances.

"I think it was a surprise that Amy Winehouse didn't really make any kind of move into the nominations," McNicholas noted.

"It's because she has partly had drug troubles and partly the fact that she has been so wholly embraced by the mainstream that I think a lot of NME readers that are always looking for the cutting edge despite the fact how much she dominated 2007," he added.

Arctic Monkeys, with their record seven nominations, are in the running for Best British Band, Best Album, Best Live Band, Best Album Artwork, Best Track (Fluorescent Adolescent,) and Best Video (Teddy Picker). Frontman Alex Turner also received a nod for Best Dressed.

The Sheffield band are NME magazine's most voted band of the decade after getting 15 NME Award nominations since hitting the music scene.

Pete Doherty's band Babyshambles are also in the running for Best Album and Best British Band, with Doherty receiving nominations in both the Best and Worst Dressed categories.

Worst album nominees include James Blunt, Britney Spears, Leona Lewis, The Hoosiers and Mika.

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony which will take place in London's O2 Centre on February 28.
