About 1,000 gallons of sewage overflowed because of a grease blockage

The Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Prichard has notified the Mobile County Health Department that approximately 1,000 gallons of sanitary sewage overflowed Monday, Jan. 28, from a manhole on Semler Avenue as the result a a grease blockage. The ultimate destination of the discharge was Hogg Bayou. Water Works personnel have corrected the problem.

Dr. Bernard Eichold, Health Officer, Mobile County Health Department, advises area residents to take precautions when coming into contact with any standing water that may have accumulated as a result of this sewer overflow. Individuals who have come into direct contact with untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly. Dr. Eichold also advises area residents to take precautions when using Hogg Branch for recreational purposes. All seafood harvested in the affected area should be thoroughly cooked before consumption. Individuals should wash their hands after cleaning any fish or other seafood and also before preparing food.
