Student-Teacher Ratios Examined

Student-Teacher Ratios Examined

Floridians debate class size restrictions.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Supporters and opponents are exchanging
ideas on how to loosen class size-reduction requirements to avoid
"absurd" results.
They also want to avoid asking voters to amend Florida's
constitution. That's what put the limits in place six years ago.
Even the statewide teachers union that helped pass the
restrictions offered a proposal during a House committee meeting
Tuesday.
The union plan would let classes increase by up to five students
to accommodate growth after the school year starts if other options
are impractical or too disruptive.
Associations representing school boards and superintendents
proposed counting reading coaches, gym teachers and others in
calculating student-teacher ratios.
