BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. (AP) - A Mobile County district judge
denied bond today for a man accused of throwing four young children
to their deaths from an 80-foot-tall coastal bridge after a fight
with his wife.
37-year-old Lam Luong, who faces four counts of capital murder,
was shackled hand and foot and wore a bullet-proof vest amid heavy
security at the brief bond hearing. He was appointed a defense
attorney but no arguments were made on his behalf.
Authorities said Luong was charged in the deaths of the
children, who range in age from 4 months to 3 years, when he broke
down and confessed.
In denying bond, Judge Charles McKnight described the
allegations in the capital murder case as "heinous."
Outside the courtroom, District Attorney John Tyson Junior
declined to discuss details of the case, but said, "We believe he
killed the kids by tossing them off the bridge."
The appointed defense attorney unavailable for comment.
Meanwhile, boats were back into waters around the Dauphin Island
bridge today to resume the search for bodies, but divers and
helicopters were kept on hold because of heavy fog.
