ABBEVILLE, Ala. (AP) - An 18-year-old hunter has been charged
with manslaughter in the apparent accidental shooting death of a
15-year-old friend whose hunter orange cap was covered by a hooded
coat.
A distraught Michael Newman initially told investigators
yesterday (Thursday) he fired at a deer when the bullet missed,
then struck and killed Joey Drescher. Later, Newman said he simply
shot at movement in a pine thicket. He thought the movement was a
deer.
The shot from his .270 caliber rifle struck Drescher in the
chest. Newman said he ran out of the woods, found his grandfather,
and the two went to a store to call police.
Drescher was pronounced dead at the scene around 9:30 a.m.,
about four hours after the two friends from the Tumbleton community
walked into the woods.
Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox said Newman was released on
bond. He said a grand jury will review the case.
