MANCHESTER, England (AP) - There are reports of minor damage but
no injuries from the strongest earthquake to hit Britain in more
than two decades.
British seismologists say the 5.3-magnitude quake struck early
today and was centered about 125 miles north of London. A spokesman
for the British Geological survey says it was felt across all of
England and the southern part of Scotland. He says it would qualify
as an "average" quake in most of the world, but for Britain it
was "very large."
A man about 60 miles from the epicenter tells The Associated
Press "it was scary." He says a chest of drawers started wobbling
and there was a loud rumbling noise.
Others throughout England reported feeling their homes shaken by
the earthquake in a country where such tremors are uncommon.
