WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorneys for imprisoned former Alabama Gov.
Don Siegelman are calling for the Justice Department to appoint a
special prosecutor to the case. They said a key government witness
apparently was told to write out his allegations "to get his story
straight."
Vince Kilborn, an attorney for the former Democratic governor,
said any evidence that the key witness had practiced writing out
his testimony before the trial should have been turned over to the
defense team before trial. Kilborn said the notes of witness Nick
Bailey would have raised serious questions about the credibility of
his testimony.
The lead prosecutor in the case denied that the witness wrote
out his testimony for prosecutors, as described in a Sunday
broadcast of CBS's "60 Minutes."
