DENVER (AP) - The father of a Florida girl who was raped and
murdered by a convicted sex offender is in Colorado supporting a
plan to require sex offenders to wear GPS tracking devices.
Jessica Lunsford was 9 years old when she was assaulted and
buried alive in 2005. Her father, Mark Lunsford, is working with
advocates across the country to pass state laws meant to protect
children from sex offenders.
About 50 of the 1,300 Colorado sex offenders who are out on
parole or probation wear GPS devices.
A bill scheduled for a vote in the Legislature Wednesday would
require all of them to wear the devices.
The main sticking point is the $4 million cost. Lawmakers want
offenders to pay it, but officials say only 10 percent of them
could afford to.
